HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — After dropping two of three to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers this past weekend, Marshall softball seeks to improve its April record as it faces the Radford Highlanders for a Tuesday doubleheader at Dot Hicks Field.

Since winning eight of its final 10 games of the previous month, the Ides of March seem to have skipped a month and followed the Herd into April. Despite a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday afternoon, Marshall softball now owns an overall record of 24-21, 10-8 in the Sun Belt Conference, and 3-7 since its series loss to the Appalachian State Mountaineers in Boone, N.C.

With its 10-8 conference record, Marshall continues to fight for a bye in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Currently tied for fifth in the conference standings, the home side is in danger of falling under the six-team cutoff with another series loss, as Louisiana and Southern Miss are close behind with respective conference records of 9-9 and 8-9.

Meanwhile, fortunes continue to shift positively for the Radford Highlanders since beginning the month with an 18-18 record. On the back of an 8-4 record in April, the visitors from the Big South Conference improved to a 26-22 overall record while going 11-4 in conference play, sitting atop the Big South standings.

The Highlanders are also seeking to avenge a loss of their own, coming off of its most recent 2-1 loss to the Winthrop Eagles. Despite that, the Highlanders took two of three from the Eagles this past weekend, highlighted by a three-hit complete game shutout by freshman right-hander Dakota Redmon in the series opener.

Redmon’s 2.32 ERA is the third lowest in the Big South, while the freshman leads in strikeouts (119) and ranks second in wins (15). Offensively, Radford is led by the duo of senior shortstop Rachel Smith and sophomore third baseman Amanda Lee, hitting .308 and .313, respectively. While Lee ranks eighth in the Big South in hits (47), Smith leads the conference in triples (4).
