HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WMUL-FM) — The annual Marcos award show for student athletes took place on April 6.
The event is planned by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, or SAAC.
“We fund it, we advertise for it, we do all the planning. It’s all within student athletes working together from different sports, different backgrounds to make one big event that everybody can enjoy,” Alex Woodrum, a senior on the cheerleading team said.
Senior Women’s Tennis player, Kylie Fisher’s role within SAAC is serving on the Marketing and Events committee.
“So for the Marketing and Events Team, we oversee all the events that go on throughout SAAC and also coordinate the events with everyone that is participating in SACC,” Fisher said.
Specifically for The Marcos, the Marketing and Events Committee has secured a venue, vendors, collaborations, and free swag for attendees.
Woodrum has another crucial role for The Marcos.
“I’m the head creative, and I’m editing, and working on all the videos for The Marcos,” he said. “I also get to present an award with one of my teammates. So, we‘re going to be presenting an award together. I think it‘s really fun, and I also want to see how my work that I edit and created is viewed by the rest of the athletics department.”
The SAAC itself is composed of 2-4 athletes from each sport whose coaches feel like they are the best fit to represent both the voices of the student-athletes and the voices of the athletic department.
“The Marcos is our biggest event, but we have also helped out at the local dog shelter, and along with Habitat for Humanity,” Fisher said. As a SAAC rep, we definitely are a voice of reason throughout our sport. So, if there’s ever a problem in our sport, then we come to our advisors and our mentors in SAAC and find a solution. SAAC truly is the voice of Marshall Athletics as a student athlete.”
Due to this only being the 3rd established year of SAAC at Marshall, the goal is for SAAC’s impact on the university and community to only grow stronger in the seasons to come.
