HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WMUL-FM) — April 22 marks 55 years of celebrating Earth Day.

Students were getting ready to show their love for the Earth in the days leading up to Earth Day.

Students’ plans ranged from walking around campus to just keeping the planet clean.

Emma Robinson said, “I like to walk around campus and see what is going on.”

“Free plants are handed out and you kind of just get to know more about our environment,” she said.

“I just feel like keeping the Earth nice and straight and so that way it can be a better atmosphere,” Alex Meza said.

One environmental science major said that while she is excited for Earth day, it’s important to remember that the Earth needs to be protected twenty-four seven.

“Every day should be Earth Day,” Niyah Sapp said. “We should always be mindful of our actions and how they impact the Earth.”

While one student loves the Earth, they didn’t want to forget how Earth Day is weaponized by some groups.

“Recycling was created to shift the blame of environmental destruction from corporations onto the common man, and Earth Day often perpetuates that lie that it is the individual’s responsibility to take care of our Earth when really the entire reason for the environmental crisis we’re in is because of the greed of the ruling class,” Michael Davis said.
