FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Students from Marshall University’s public radio station, WMUL-FM, received one (1) Silver Award in the 15th Annual International Davey Awards Competition for 2019. The winners were named in a letter sent to WMUL-FM from the International Academy of the Visual Arts (IAVA) in New York, New York.

The International Davey Awards are creative awards focused exclusively on honoring outstanding creative work from the best small firms worldwide. Just as David defeated the mighty Goliath with a big idea and a little rock that is the sort of thing small firms do everyday. The International Davey Awards level the playing field so entrants complete with only their peers. There were nearly 4,000 entries in the International Davey Awards Competition for 2019 from ad agencies, radio stations, production firms, in-house creative professionals, graphic designers, design firms and public relations firms.

Entries are judged by the International Academy of the Visual Arts. The International Davey Awards offer two levels of award recognition – Gold and Silver. Entries are scored on a ten-point scale by the judges. Generally, Gold Winners receive a score of 9.0 or above and Silver Winners receive a score of 7.0 to 8.9. The two levels of winners, which are approximately ten percent of the total entries, are listed on the International Davey Awards 2019 website at www.daveyawards.com.

“We are proud to once again showcase the outstanding work that comes from small shops across the globe. The Davey Awards recognize those who utilize flawless execution, groundbreaking technology, and a fresh approach to the thought process to produce top-tier content,” noted Derek Howard, executive director of the International Academy of the Visual Arts. He added, “On behalf of the Davey Awards and our Academy, we want to applaud this year’s entrants for their dedication and commitment to their craft.”

Dr. Chuck G. Bailey, professor of radio-television production and management in the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Marshall University and faculty manager of WMUL-FM, said, “It is gratifying for WMUL-FM student sportscasters to be recognized with a silver award for an engaging sports Twitter feed. This silver award indicates a strong social media presence by the FM 88 Sports Staff.”

“I am proud for the honor this International Davey Award bestows on WMUL-FM, the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications, the College of Arts and Media and Marshall University. This silver award indicates the respect the IAVA judges have for the writing and sports reporting commitment of our student sportscasters that their Twitter feed entry exhibited during this worldwide competition against professional practitioners in similar sized organizations.”
