HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — In its second game of the new year, the Marshall Men’s Basketball team took on the Troy Trojans at the Cam Henderson Center. The Herd (8-7) came into the game after beating the Texas State Bobcats at home to secure their first conference win of the year, while Troy (9-4) came to Huntington boasting a four-game win streak, including two straight conference wins.
Despite leading the Trojans 31-19 at the half, Marshall was outplayed in the second half, allowing Troy to claw their way back into the game and win 58-57. The Herd were led by Obinna Anochili-Killen, who put up 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 blocks. The Marshall forward was honored pregame for becoming the all-time block leader in Marshall’s esteemed hoop history.
Anochili-Killen was the only Herd player to enter double figures in any stat. However, all but one of the Marshall players who saw the floor scored points, highlighting the Herd’s ability to get everyone involved.
The Trojans caught the Herd off guard in the second half, moving the ball well and having great shot selection. Troy guard Tayton Conerway led the team in scoring with 20 points while also adding 5 steals. Forward Myles Rigsby was the Trojans secondary leader in points, posting 13 while shooting 100% from beyond the arc.
This loss, while bad for the season, highlights Marshall’s flaws and will hopefully allow for coach Cornelius Jackson to push the team in the right direction moving forward. The Herd’s next contest will be a tough one as they host the defending Sun Belt Tournament Champions, the James Madison Dukes, on January 9th at 7:00 pm.
