HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — On an ice-cold Wednesday night, the Marshall Thundering Herd (5-11) took on the JMU Dukes (13-4) in their second meeting of the season. The Herd came into the match on a five-game skid, while the Duke’s came to town on a five-game win streak, representing polar opposite seasons.

The Herd struggled all night long shooting just 32% from the field going into halftime, while its counterpart JMU shot 53% from the field in the first half. Marshall trailed 50-30 going into the half, and it saw limited improvement in the second half, eventually losing 93-65.

Despite a mediocre performance by the Herd, it shot 70% from the free-throw line while keeping up with the Dukes on the glass being narrowly out-rebounded 37 to 32. Marshall’s CC Mays finished as the Herd’s leading scorer, finishing with a career and game high 24 points while shooting 4 for 4 from the charity stripe.

Aislynn Hayes helped Mays in the scoring department, netting 12 points while leading the Herd with 4 assists.

While the Herd struggled, its opponent flourished. The Dukes finished with four scorers in double figures. Ro Scott finished with a team high 20 points to go along with three steals. The Dukes defense was on point, forcing 20 turnovers and scoring 29 points off said turnovers.

Despite the rough loss, the Herd look to push forward under first year coach Juli Fulks when it hosts App State on Saturday, Jan. 18th at 1 p.m. at the Cam Henderson Center.
