HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WMUL-FM) – The Marshall University Baseball Team (5-6) defeated Fairleigh Dickenson (0-10) 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at Jack Cook Field to complete a weekend sweep.
The Herd got ahead 2-0 through two innings thanks to an RBI single from AJ Havrilla that scored Jackson Halter in the first, and an RBI groundout by senior Eddie Leon that chased home Tyler Kamerer in the second.
At the top of the seventh inning, the Knights held a 4-2 lead over the Herd after responding with runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and seventh innings.
Kamerer and Ethan Murdoch were at second and first as Leon hit a double down the left-field line with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to score both runners and tie the game at four.
In the bottom of the eighth, Marshall brought Kamerer to the plate by loading the bases with a Halter double, a Havrilla single, and a walk to Elijah Vogelsong. Kamerer scored Halter with a sacrifice fly to center, putting the Thundering Herd back ahead 5–4.
The senior closer, Nicholas Weyrich, loaded the bases in the ninth inning after allowing a hit and two walks, but was able to record a strikeout and a line out to third basemen Leon to secure the sweep for the Herd. This is Marshall’s its first sweep at home since defeating Rice University three times in 2019.
The Thundering Herd continues its current homestand this Tuesday against the Ohio Bobcats, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
