HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WMUL-FM) — Support groups on Marshall’s campus are very beneficial and help many people cope with their traumas and anxieties, while also having other people to talk about it with and give them a sense of community.
Organizations like the Resiliency Circle, a support group for individuals who have survived sexual violence, and Fostering Independence, helping people in foster care manage their lives, can help many, as having traumas while being on campus can be hard to deal with.
The Resiliency Circle, sponsored by the Women’s Center and the Counseling Center, meets on the last Wednesday of every month from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Old Main.
The student-led group gives people a safe space to be able to talk about their struggles with sexual abuse. “This peer-to-peer group is led by fellow students who understand and are here to provide connection, understanding and support,” the Marshall University Events Calendar description said.
In addition, the Counseling Center is also available to individuals who need extra support.
“Survivors of all ages, identities and lived experiences are welcome regardless of when the violence may have occurred,” the Marshall University Events Calendar description said. “Community guidelines will be established at the beginning of every meeting and may be revised at any time.”
Fostering Independence meets at East Hall from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Their next meeting is on April 3.
The group is for students who have been in foster and kinship care and people who do not have family support and helping them with different skills, such as budgeting, how to set up a bank account, how to find an apartment and more. They also help to connect students with resources both on campus and in the community.
