HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — The Marshall Thundering Herd Baseball Team played host to the 24th-ranked West Virginia University Mountaineers on Tuesday. Marshall (18-18) came into the game after dropping its latest conference series to App. State. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers (30-4) came to Huntington following a series sweep of the Houston Cougars and looked to keep their momentum going against the Herd.

Scoring began in the second inning after WVU’s Grant Hussey hit a double scoring two RBIs from second and third. The Herd came back to equalize in the bottom of the inning; a Nolan Wilson bunt resulted in a throwing error allowing Tyler Kamerer to score. Marshall kept on bunting as Eddie Leon came to the plate and put down a sacrifice that equalized as Elijah Vogelsong crossed the plate.

The Herd kept hitting well, scoring runs in the fourth and fifth innings on a Jackson Halter single and a Joel Gardner double to take a 4-2 lead going into the sixth. The Mountaineers answered in the top of the seventh inning with two singles from Brodie Kresser and Gavin Kelly for a run apiece, making the score 4-4.

A scoreless eighth inning saw both teams go into the ninth inning in do-or-die mode. The Mountaineers managed to put runners on second and third, this allowed WVU’s Chase Swain to steal home for the final run of the game. Despite a valiant effort in the bottom of the ninth, the Herd was knocked off in a game where it led for two innings.

The Mountaineer pitching staff was great in their win, being led by righty Carson Estridge, who got the win and advanced to 3-0 on the year. Estridge threw three strikeouts, including the game-ender, and finished with a 3.93 ERA.

The Herd struggled to close the game but challenged the Mountaineers, nonetheless. Marshall will head to Conway, S.C. on Thursday for a conference series against the 21st-ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. With a ranked series win over Southern Miss already under its belt, the Herd will show no leeway to the Chants and look to steal a series.
