Coal Cats Lose Three of Four in Home Series Finale
With the regular season coming to a close, the Tri-State Coal Cats hosted their final home series against the Danville Otterbots. Both teams had an extended break due to the All-Star game, which was played the day before. The teams sat on opposite ends of the standings coming into the matchup, with Danville standing at the top of the Appy League East with a record of 26-15, and Tri-State sitting at the bottom of the division at 19-22.

The Tri-State Coal Cats flipped their fortunes over the past two weeks, taking five of the last six games and nine of the last twelve. Back-to-back series sweeps of Elizabethton, and Danville were followed up by a split doubleheader at Burlington, bringing Tri-State’s overall record to 19-22.

The Tri-State Coal Cats returned to Huntington to square off against the Elizabethton River Riders in a two-game series. The River Riders came in at 14-20 and The Coal Cats were 14-21, as both teams looked to get their 15th victory of the year.

Coal Cats Return to Huntington After Successful Road Trip
Following a five-game losing streak to kick off the month of July, the Tri-State Coal Cats managed to win four of their next six road games. The Cats played in three consecutive two-game series against the Johnson City Doughboys, Elizabethton River Riders, and Pulaski River Turtles. Heading into the road trip, Tri-State held a 10-19 record.

The Coal Cats recorded one win in their first six outings of July, leaving them with an overall record of 10-19, placing them last in the East Division of the Appalachian League.

Coal Cats Come Up Empty-Pawed On the Road by Johnathan Edwards
The Tri-State Coal Cats faced difficulties during their recent road trip, losing twice to the Bristol State Liners, tying with the Kingsport Axmen in the first game of Thursday’s doubleheader (which counted as a loss due to the tiebreaker rule), and losing the final two games against Kingsport.

Hitting Woes Haunt the Coal Cats in Burlington Series by Ethan Peltier
Following a split doubleheader with the Johnson City Doughboys, the Tri-State Coal Cats hosted the Burlington Sock Puppets for a four-game series. The Coal Cats struggled to hit the ball against Burlington, leading to three straight losses. Heading into the series, the Sock Puppets held a 7-6 record, while the Coal Cats were at an even 6-6 record.

Coal Cats Split Doubleheader with Doughboys by Johnathan Edwards
The Coal Cats maintained their trend of alternating wins and losses, splitting Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Johnson City Doughboys. The first game, played under sunny skies at Jack Cook Field, ended with the Doughboys defeating the Coal Cats 12-9.

Coal Cats Break Even with the Ridge Runners in Bluefield by Johnathan Edwards
The Tri-State Coal Cats experienced mixed fortunes over the weekend, splitting a pair of games with the Bluefield Ridge Runners. On Saturday, June 15th, Tri-State extended its road game record to a perfect 3-0 with a dominant 11-3 victory over Bluefield.

Coal Cats Return to Huntington: Secure First Home Win, Split Series With Greeneville by Ethan Peltier
After dropping two straight games in a disappointing opening home series, the Tri-State Coal Cats returned to Huntington to play in a four-game slate against the Greeneville Flyboys. The Coal Cats entered the series with an even 2-2 record, while the visiting Flyboys entered with a 3-1 record.

Opening Day Showers and Inexperience Spoil the Coal Cats’ Opening Homestand by Johnathan Edwards
When it rains, it pours. The inaugural season-opening homestand for the Tri-State Coal Cats garnered a buzz from the community, a sizeable in-person crowd, and a few firsts… just not a first win. Tuesday, June 4th, presented the city of Huntington its first home minor league baseball game in three decades, an evening matchup between the Pulaski River Turtles and the debuting Tri-State Coal Cats.
