Faculty Manager
Chuck Bailey is a native of Amherstdale, West Virginia. He is a 1970 graduate of Man High School in Logan County, West Virginia, and he received his bachelor of arts degree (1974) in radio/television and his master’s of arts degree in communication/broadcasting (1985) from Marshall University. In 1993 he received his doctorate from West Virginia University through the WVU/COGS/MU Cooperative Program in Higher Education Administration with a minor in communication/ broadcasting. Dr. Bailey’s dissertation is titled “Perceptions of Professional Radio Station Managers of the Training and Experience of Potential Employees Who Have Worked in College Radio Under One of Three Different Administrative Patterns.”
Dr. Bailey has taught at Marshall University since 1985. He is the Faculty Manager of WMUL-FM and a full-time Radio-Television Production and Management Professor. Dr. Bailey’s students have experienced extraordinary success in direct competitions with other college radio stations across the nation and professional radio stations in West Virginia. WMUL-FM was named in 1993 the Outstanding College Radio Station by the Marconi College Radio Awards and has been runner-up for College Station of the Year in 1991 and 1996 by the National Association of College Broadcasters. His students have won 2,351 individual awards in competitions.
On October 12, 2013, Dr. Bailey was inducted into the West Virginia Broadcasting Hall of Fame and September 23, 2016 he was inducted into the Marshall University W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications Hall of Fame. Bailey has received several other honors for his advising of the campus radio station. Some of the awards include the Lifetime Achievement Award (2007) from the West Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters Association, The John Marshall Award for Extraordinary Service to West Virginia Higher Education (2000), and the College Media Advisers Distinguished Four-Year Broadcast Adviser Award (1995).
Before teaching radio, Dr. Bailey was employed in the coal industry by Bailey Trucking Company, Inc., Island Creek Coal Company and Amherst Coal Company from 1974 to 1983. His hobbies are photography and baseball card and stamp collecting.
