Joseph W. Wortham

Joseph “Joe” Wortham was a senior, working as a student assistant statistician for Gene Morehouse, the Sports Information Officer. Wortham had first choice for road trips and would have selected the East Carolina game, but he passed to take a national educational test on that Saturday in order to graduate. Another student assistant, Gary George, made the trip instead. He was named the interim Sports Information Officer following the crash, working until a new director was hired in June 1971. He continues to work for the University–over 30 years–mostly in the athletic department. Currently he serves as the concessions manager.

He was not on the airplane.
